Sybilla Technologies is excited to announce its participation in a pivotal European space safety initiative. As part of the Commercial Data Provision ORASOA202302023 project, Sybilla will deliver advanced Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) data to the European Space Surveillance and Tracking (EU SST) consortium. This marks a significant milestone for the company, as it becomes a direct data provider to EU SST, contributing cutting-edge sensor technology to safeguard space assets and ensure global space security. 

Enhancing Space Safety with Cutting-Edge Technology 

The increasing number of objects in Earth’s orbit—ranging from satellites to debris—poses growing risks to space operations. Sybilla’s participation in the EU SST – Commercial Data Provision initiative will help address this challenge. Sybilla will utilize five state-of-the-art optical sensors to deliver precise, high-performance tracking data for objects in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and Geostationary Orbit (GEO). 

The five-sensor array, which includes three classical telescopes with apertures between 20 and 35 cm and two static telescopes specially designed for enhanced precision, is tailored to detect, track, and deliver Tracking Data Messages (TDMs) to the EU SST. This data plays a critical role in the real-time monitoring of space objects, providing essential information for collision avoidance and monitoring debris fragmentation. 

Sybilla’s sensor systems are equipped with advanced features that make them indispensable to the project: 

  • Key sensors with large field of view (up to 7.26 square degrees) and LEO tracking capabilities, able to track objects at altitudes as low as 500 km. Their fast response times enable the acquisition of new observations within 15-30 minutes from request, with the potential to reduce this to just 1-2 minutes in future phases. 
  • High throughput: The ability to track 30-60 targets per hour, with even higher capacities in cases of multiple objects in the field of view, ensuring comprehensive space surveillance. 
  • Real-time data delivery: These sensors can process and transmit tracking data within just a few minutes of observation, ensuring rapid updates for mission-critical space operations. 

The integration of these advanced sensors is vital for strengthening Europe’s observational network, with sensors based in Europe and key international regions such as Australia and Asia. This comprehensive sensor coverage enhances global space safety by providing accurate, real-time data on space objects. 

A New Revenue Stream and Growing Reputation for Sybilla Technologies 

For Sybilla, this project not only represents a technical achievement but also opens new business opportunities. By acting as a direct data provider to the EU SST, Sybilla gains access to a significant new revenue stream. The framework agreement amounts to around 1,6 million euro, which represents significant funds allocated to this project. This marks the first time that Sybilla will earn revenue directly from EU SST, a major step forward in its commercial operations. Previously, Sybilla provided data indirectly through intermediaries such as the Polish Space Agency. 

Moreover, this partnership further solidifies Sybilla’s position as a trusted leader in space surveillance technologies. By delivering data that enhances the safety and security of space assets, Sybilla is reinforcing its reputation for providing innovative and reliable solutions for the global space industry. 

Delivering High-Quality Data to Secure Space 

The primary goal of the project is to improve space safety through the delivery of high-performance SST data, with Sybilla’s sensors providing crucial tracking information. The company’s technology offers: 

  • Astrometric accuracy of less than 2 arcseconds, ensuring precise object tracking. 
  • Rapid data turnaround, with TDMs delivered within 1-3 hours on average, a critical factor in avoiding potential collisions and monitoring re-entries into Earth’s atmosphere. 
  • A large field of view and high target throughput, allowing the simultaneous observation of multiple space objects, which boosts the effectiveness of collision avoidance systems and other space safety services. 

In addition to tracking space debris and satellites, the data provided by Sybilla will support several essential space safety services, including collision avoidance, catalog maintenance, fragmentation monitoring, and re-entry tracking. As the space environment becomes increasingly congested, Sybilla’s data will play a crucial role in protecting space infrastructure. 

Sybilla’s Leadership and Innovation 

The project also showcases Sybilla’s deep technical expertise in sensor integration, deployment, and optimization. Sybilla’s Sensor Network Operations (SNO) team will oversee the operational management of the sensor systems, while the company’s Software Engineering team will focus on necessary system adaptations to meet EU SST’s evolving needs. The IT and platform operations teams will ensure the security, continuity, and reliability of data services throughout the project’s 25-month duration. 

A Strategic Move Towards a Safer Future in Space 

Sybilla’s involvement in the EU SST initiative aligns with its mission to contribute to global space security. As the number of objects in orbit continues to rise, the risks to space infrastructure grow accordingly.
