Head of Sensor Network Operations

At Sybilla Technologies, we seek a dedicated Head of Sensor Network Operations to lead the continuous operation of our 40-telescope network, ensuring 24/7 data delivery and high performance. You’ll manage a team of operators, oversee day-to-day operations, and plan for future expansion, including additional telescopes in 2026. Your role includes managing fault monitoring systems, coordinating with engineering teams to address issues, and ensuring operational efficiency. You’ll also handle budgeting, staff training, and documentation. You’ll lead network improvements, oversee sensor integration, and ensure compliance with all standards and security measures. Sybilla Technologies designs builds and operates robotic optical observatories for monitoring objects in space. The company specializes in the complete systems, software for automated data acquisition, analysis, and scheduling of networks of sensors. We work in the domains of Space Situational Awareness, Space Surveillance and Tracking, Space Traffic Management, Near Earth Objects, stellar and planetary research, education, and commercial on-demand observations.

Your Responibilities

Primary responsibility (7 days/week) is maintaining 40 telescopes and delivering requested data, with 24/7 support. Additional telescopes to be introduced in 2026. 

Key tasks include: 

  • Leading telescope operations as Team Leader, overseeing daily meetings, and delegating routine and repair work. 
  • Planning future work based on telescope usage contracts and authorizing resource allocation for nighttime/out-of-schedule tasks. 
  • Supervising customer success until a dedicated leader is hired. 
  • Chairing meetings with customers and engineering teams to review past issues and plan for future requirements. 
  • Ensuring the fault monitoring system is effective, issues are resolved, and feedback is provided. 
  • Reviewing engineering requirements and providing feedback on proposed schedules to project managers and customers. 
  • Coordinating with Project Managers and engineering teams to ensure staffing aligns with operational needs, preparing staff rosters two months in advance. 
  • Managing the operational infrastructure budget and ensuring spend aligns with allocation. 
  • Acting as Duty Engineer and Incident Officer when required. 
  • Ensuring operational documentation is accurate, updated, and followed. 
  • Establishing and managing a training program for the operations team to ensure skill development. 
  • Identifying and implementing network infrastructure improvements. 
  • Commissioning and decommissioning sensors in collaboration with engineering and project teams. 
  • Ensuring compliance with regulations, maintaining security of sensors and data integrity. 
  • Communicating with stakeholders on network performance and planned improvements. 
  • Developing response plans for sensor network disruptions to minimize operational impact. 

 

Requirements

  • Higher education in engineering, astronomy, astrophysics, computer science, physics, mathematics, or related fields (STEM). 
  • Diversity of experience with two or more areas: software, hardware, optics, observations, systems diagnostics, customer support would be an advantage. 
  • The primary requirement is for organizational, management and leadership skills to organize operations, analyze and resolve technical problems, monitor trends and plan for future requirements in order to maintain the sensor network as best in its class. 
  • The interpersonal skills needed to liaise with other senior staff over the requirements of the schedule and deployment of necessary resources, whilst being able to lead and motivate team members. 
  • Experience in working and being responsive to the demands of an operational environment. 
  • Being capable of leading a team working to deadlines, sometimes under demanding conditions and unsociable hours. 
  • Proficiency in English enabling effective communication and writing of technical documentation. 
  • Driving license.  
  • Capability to travel to remote places for sensors installation, maintenance, decommissioning. 
  • Security clearance for EU/ESA SECRET sensitive information or willingness to go through security check to obtain such clearance. 

Nice to Have

  • Experience in working with or managing astronomical observatory. 
  • Experience in sensor network operations, sensor network management, space observations or a related field. 
  • PhD in engineering, astrophysics, physics, or other fields related to the job. 

Terms of employment

  • Employment will be delivered in a remote or hybrid model (main office in Bydgoszcz, Poland).  
  • Ability to travel to remote sites (on a need basis) and to headquarters (once per quarter).  
  • B2B salary at the level of 17 000 – 27 000 PLN, depending on the experience and skills. 
  • The candidate will have a specialist assigned as mentor during initial weeks of employment.
